Happiness when shared, is doubled

26 May

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up on his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain off fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had o spend all his time flat on his back.

These men became friends and they talked for hours on end.

They talked of their wives, children, homes, jobs, and what not.

Every afternoon, when the man on the bed by the window, could sit up, he would pass his time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man on the other bed began to live for those one hour periods, everyday, where his world would be enlivened by all the activity and colour of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every colour. Thus a fine view of the city skyline could be seen at the distance.

As the man by the window described all the exquisite details ,the other man would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

Days ,weeks and months passed.

One morning the nurse arrived to bring water for the bath of the two patients. She was awestricken to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take away the body.

In the meanwhile the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse did the same.

Slowly the man managed to get a view out of the window. But he was surprised to find a blank wall outside. Out of curiosity , he asked the nurse what could have compelled the deceased man, to describe such wonderful things outside this window, which actually do not exist.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said humbly, “perhaps he just wanted to encourage you”.

What is deduced from this incidence???

Is it strong enough to through some impact on us?

Well it is genuine, that you get tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite your own situations. And this is the best modesty one can do.
